Abstract
Advanced cancer of the oral cavity has been treated with wide excision in conjunction with mandibulectomy and neck dissection. This has resulted in significant mandibulofacial defects with functional and cosmetic significance. In the past efforts
at
primary reconstruction using grafts, osteomyocutaneous flaps have yielded unsatisfactory results.
We present five patients who underwent composite resection for advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx, with simultaneous reconstruction using fibular free osteocutaneous flaps. All except one flap was survived. All
patients
enjoy their diet orally. Their aesthetic figures were satisfactory especially in cases of anterior arch reconstruction. Skin flap was enough to reconstruct entire floor of the mouth. In this article we discuss our experiences, surgical
procedures,
pitfall and complication of fibular free flap. (Korean J Otolaryngol 39 : 1, 1996)
